I stumbled upon the work of Roger Kelly whilst site hopping the internet, his latest paintings are something which caught my eye purely down to the fact they look like they were created digitally. The collection titled ‘A Sort of Night to the Mind, A Kind of Night for our Thoughts’ – which derives from two alternative translations of Honoré de Balzac’s description of illusion from the 1832 short story ‘The Purse’, was recently on show at ‘Artary Galerie’ in Germany.
“Roger Kelly makes intricate large-scale landscape paintings that originate as line drawings, combining photographic references and invented elements”.
The drawings are enlarged and then transferred to canvas and painted, resulting in compositions that appear to be digitized, downloaded images that belie their painstakingly handcrafted nature.
